For Andy

Please visit http://hyenacart.com/kumfykozies/ to help a family in need by placing a bid or donating an item for auction...below is taken from Kumfy Kozies' website where auctions are taking place to help benefit some personal friends of mine as they are currently living without an income as their small son is receiving Hospice care.

After more than five years of dating, Leah and Mikey tied the knot in August of 2005. Shortly after, they decided they wanted to start a family, and after many months, they finally got their positive test. On February 25th, 2007, Andrew Lawrence was born. Leah and Mikey were overjoyed at their amazing little miracle, and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of parenting their tiny bundle.

Shortly after his first birthday, Andy suddenly had a seizure. It passed quickly and the doctor was not concerned, but when he had another more serious seizure several weeks later, Andy was diagnosed with Epilepsy. After being put on various medications, he seemed to do better, until later that year, he began looking sick. Leah and Mikey took him to the doctor, to find that Andy was in liver failure. The family set up temporary residence in Pittsburgh, PA, where Andy was transferred to for more specialized care. After many weeks, Andy's liver miraculously healed itself, but the family was rocked when tests came back showing the real reason for his illness. A liver biopsy and DNA testing showed that Andy had a very rare mitochondrial disorder called Alpers' Syndrome. The medical community describes Alpers' as follows:

"a progressive degenerative disease of the central nervous system that occurs mostly in infants and children... There is no cure for Alpers' disease and, currently, no way to slow its progression... The prognosis for individuals with Alpers' disease is poor. Those with the disease usually die within their first decade of life." -Wikipedia, Alper's Syndrome
Life for Andy since his diagnosis at 19-months-old has been difficult, to say the least. He is immuno-suppressed, and even the pain and fever from teething can put his brain into shock, causing life-threatening seizures. His body has rapidly declined over the last two years. He can no longer crawl or sit up unassisted, has very little spoken vocabulary (though it's obvious he understands everything around him) and often has difficulty swallowing. He sees three therapists six times a week, and Leah left her job while he was young in order to stay home and devote her life to giving him the best possible care around the clock. Since Alper's is such a rare condition, there are very few doctors that have ever even heard of it, much less know how to care for a child with the disease.

Since January 2010, Andy has had a sudden decline in physical ability, and his seizure activity has been nearly constant. On June 23, 2010, Andy was unable to fully wake up from his nap. He seemed awake, but was stuck in a seizure state, that despite numerous doses of anti-convulsants, would not loose its grip on his body and mind. He was admitted to the local hospital in Central New York, then transferred to the Pediatric ICU at Upstate Galisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse, NY, where he has been in a coma and on life-support since June 24th.

Andy's little sister is staying with family near the hospital while his mommy and daddy keep constant vigil by his bedside, praying for a miracle for their little hero who the doctors say all the odds are against. While he has shown definite improvement, he still has not awakened, and the doctors feel that he will be there for at least another two to three weeks. Because they are hours from home, Mikey is taking Family Medical Leave from work so they can be with Andy at the hospital, but that leaves an enormous need for the single-income family. Please take a moment to look through the auctions we will be running for the next several weeks, and bid on anything that strikes your fancy.

*UPDATE*
On Friday, July 9th, Andy went home on Hospice care.

Thank you all so much for your bids. It means more than words can say. Bills are still adding up from the Atwood's stay away from home while Andy was in the PICU for two weeks, so all auction proceeds will continue to go directly to them to help lighten the financial burden.

NOVICA Q&A

I recently did a review for NOVICA, an organization that helps bring fair trade work from international artisans to the web. If you haven't already read that review, check it out at http://lifemoresimply.blogspot.com/2010/06/novica-hammock-swing-review.html before reading any further.

You may wonder why I'm doing a follow-up sort of post since this isn't something that I normally do. Well, the answer is because NOVICA excites me. When I first visited them, I immediately fell in love and sent out an email to my coworkers with a link to http://novica.com/. Subsequently, I visited many times as I sifted through all of the unique, beautiful, and useful things in their selection. It is for these simple reasons that I'm bringing them up again: 1) I stand behind what they're doing to promote artists and art, and 2) they have a LOT of cool stuff that I wish all resided in my own home. :-)

So read the review, visit their website, and then check out this interesting additional information they sent to me after I had dug through their site and still had a few questions:

How does NOVICA find its artists? We have offices around the world staffed with local culture and art experts that are always looking for new artists. We go to open air markets, hold contests, and go to hard to get to places to find new artists. Also, within the artisan community, many hear about us and come to our offices directly through word of mouth.

• How is NOVICA funded since I saw that you don't charge the artists anything? We're funded through National Geographic, the World Bank, the Grassroots Business Fund, and other venture investors. We don't charge the artists anything to list their products, but we do have a markup on top of their price. The artist sets their price and then based on logistics and regional factors there is a markup to get to the final retail price.

• Does the above mean that the artist receives 100% (minus credit card fees and shipping) of the item's cost? No, we have a markup on top of the artist's price, same as traditional retailers, except our process is a lot more efficient because we are going direct to the artisans. This allows the artists to charge more than local retail and us to value-price our items versus traditional retailers.

• I noticed that more industrialized countries aren't represented--why is that? we do have the intention to work with some industrialized countries in the future, although we offer less of a service in industrialized nations because artists in industrialized countries do have online outlets to sell their wares. in some of the countries we operate in, if it wasn't for us, the artisans would not be able to focus on their crafts and make a living.

Thanks again to NOVICA for initially contacting me, sending me the hammock swing to review, and just for being all around great organization! Also, thank you to Ricky for working with me and being so patient as I got things together and for finding answers to all of my questions. :-)
