I wish I had a comment for you. This is one of those posts where there is a lot I could say, but I mostly just want to support you in what *you* say. I think a lot of comments don't happen just because the reader thinks they have nothing to add, or don't have time. I don't really have time, myself. But I want your first comment to be a positive one! Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, and abortion are a scourge on our society. I would urge you to reconsider whether or not contraception is the good you think it is, or if perhaps it leads so many to regard human life and reproduction as *optional*, thus encouraging abortion and the eugenic mindset of PP and M. Sanger.

Where's the little standing-ovation emoticon when I need it?! Here-here, m'lady! Margaret Sanger is the equivalent of an old world Nazi, and her target is the defenseless unborn. So sad. Protecting the unborn has always been a deep passion of mine. I have never been a bumper sticker person, but when I found a classy, factual pro-life sticker, I snatched it up and put it on my brand new car last year: Abortion stops a beating heart. I've received the middle finger for it more times than I can count, but I've also had people pull up beside me in traffic, flag me to roll my window down, and thanked me for speaking out for the unborn. I was waiting for my car to be keyed for it while I lived in Ithaca. When my children aren't so young and dependent on me, I plan to become as much of an activist in my area as I can, but for now, I speak out whenever and however I can, and plan for the future when I can be more of a voice in the community and world at large.
ReplyDeleteIt became even more of a passion for me when we were told our unborn baby had Trisomy 18, and the perinatologists (as well as some family members) encouraged us to abort. They truly felt that my child was sick, and there fore did not deserve the chance to live. Even looking at my profoundly handicapped nephew, knowing the way he has suffered every hour of every day for three and a half years, I could never tell my child that his/her life was not worth living just because it may be harder or significantly shorter than others.
I have to wonder how much of Margaret Sanger's anger came from coming from a large, poor Catholic family that did not believe in birth control. I suspct that a large part of her simply wanted to prevent others from growing up the way she did. I personally believe that the advent of the birth control pill led to great cultural changes for women, and that it is one of the greatest discoveries of our times.
ReplyDeletePlanned Parenthood has its plusses and negatives, including, one might argue, pushing women towards abortion instead of helping them investigate other options that may be open. But I personally would not hold an organization's founder's dubious statements(that seem to me to come from a bitter and possibly mentally disturbed woman) against it, when the organization itself does so much good in providing low cost and free birth control as well as often being the only sexual abuse and rape crisis counseling and advocacy in an area(such as ours; the only rape crisis advocacy and counseling in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties is run through Planned Parenthood). Obne may wish that a place like a Crisis Pregnancy Center(which is filled with propaganda of its own) would fulfill this need and also offer contraceptive advice as well, but until they do, PP continues to fill an important void in many rural communities.
Taken out of context, those quotes do seem harsh, extreme even. I'm not here to argue, but I do want to say I hear an awful lot of judgment in the preceding comments when perhaps some compassion might be more appropriate. I don't think anyone takes the decision to have an abortion lightly. While I do understand why someone would be anti-choice, women not supporting* each other only hinders alliance among mothers, which is what we really need. Just thought I'd offer another perspective. :-)
