Bambu Board Review, Part 2...and an EXTRA contest entry!

Bambu Large Hybrid Cutting Board, Golden BrownAfter sending an email to my Bambu contact with a link to my review for their Hybrid Bamboo and Cork Cutting Board, I received a note back saying "thanks, but can you make it a little more personal?" Jeff over at Bambu thought that my readers may be particularly interested in knowing the following:

What did you cut?
On what size?
What was the weight?
How did it react to your knives, how did it wash up?

Now, this is the first time I've received this sort of email from a company that I've done a review for. If you're a regular reader, you know that I don't normally include this sort of information unless I think it's pertinent to the write up. Since blog posts are supposed to be short and sweet so as to keep the reader's interest, I try to give you THE information you need in a conscise manner. Now, it's always interesting to come across something new, and after pondering this idea of answering these questions for you, I thought "why not?". Instead of simply editing my original post though, I decided to write a new one in case you didn't re-check the original post. And besides, I really do like this company a lot, so I don't mind giving them a little more PR.

So since you already know about the board, the benefits, and my reaction to it, I'll tell you a little about my experience with it.

Once upon a time, there was a girl who lived in a house with her husband and baby. This girl loved to cook, but found it hard to find the time between work, keeping house, and sleeping at night! That was until she received her Bamboo Cork cutting board in the mail from Bambu. Opening the package, the girl ran her hand over the smooth, beautiful, nutty colored wood, and went right to the sink to wash it off. Using Mrs. Meyer's dishsoap, warm water, and a cloth, the girl cleaned the board, followed by drying it with a towel. She noticed how quickly it was able to be wiped off, and how smooth the cloth graced the wood and cork.

Placing the cutting board on her table, the girl grabbed the one item for dinner that would need cutting: a loaf of sourdough bread. The bread had a crusty outer and filled 3/4 of the board with it's length. Using her cheapo bread knife from a department store knife set, she sliced her way through the loaf and onto the bamboo side of the board. Unlike her plastic cutting board, this new board made it through the bread's trauma without even a scratch. Since the board was so beautiful to behold, the girl left it on the table to serve the bread.

The next day, the girl couldn't wait to use the board again, so she got out an onion and a pepper, and cut thin slices of each one onto her board. Again, with the cheapo knives. And also again, no scratches were left--just easily sliced vegetables that didn't slide away (weighing whatever an onion and pepper approximately weigh)! The girl noticed that not only did the vegetables stay in place, but the board stayed in place, too, thanks to the cork side.

To clean it this time, the girl's husband put the board in the dish washer. *dum, de dum, dum, DUUMMMM!* When the girl opened the dishwasher and saw what her husband had done, she discovered that while the board was clean, the cork side was a little more textured now than what was once so smooth. Just a little rougher, really, but with no change in effect or function...just a lecture to the husband to please, not put this in the dishwasher again! With a protective edge to her, the girl lifted her newly cleaned (and textured) Bambu cutting board, noticing the medium weight it was (somewhere between her glass board and her plastic board--both of which are now retired forever), and slid it into it's resting place next to the stove.

The end.

Alright, hopefully that little creative writing expose answered the above questions and painted a pretty picture for you about how I used the board before writing my review! Seriously, it's a great board and I'm more than happy to give you more information about it. :-)

I guess this just goes to show what a nice person I am and how easy I am for companies to work with. ;-) Now, for those of you who are still reading (yup, I'm over that impossible 500-word limit for blog entries!), answer this question to earn an extra entry into the contest for winning this board:

Cutco Cutlery Paring Knife Classic Black 1720
What kind of knives did I use?

Leave your answer and email address over at the original posting for the Bambu Hybrid Cutting Board. Be sure to also do the mandatory entry, or this additional one won't count!

2010 and Life More Simply

2010 is a new year for Life More Simply, and we're making changes!

1) The new layout. It's already here, and will continue to improve upon the details as time goes on. What do you think about our new look? My goal is to bring a cleaner and easier to navigate layout that also provides a good opportunity for advertising.

2) Giveaways, giveaways, giveaways! I'm a little backed up on posting reviews and giveaways, so expect to see a cleaning out of my spreadsheet very soon...this means a lot of information and fun stuff for you!

3) Advertising. I will be offering different advertising options to businesses that I believe in. My goal is to have the profits of that pay for me to get the Internet at my house--just imagine all of the benefits you'll be getting if I can post more regularly and more often! WOW! I'm planning to start with 4 slots, so if you're interested in affordable advertising that will reach a target audience, send me an email right away.

4) Interactive events. I'd like to involve you even more in the events and contests I run here. The idea is simple: for 6 weeks at a time, I run an event that gives you a new "challenge" each week. As you complete the challenges, you earn points. At the end of the event, whomever has the most points will win something. In the meantime, everyone who got involved gets to improve some aspect of her life.

For example: my house is getting overhauled before this new baby arrives. That means I have 6 months (5 if I want to play it safe) to get my home organized and cleaned from top to bottom. In starting this process, I've realized that I can't be the only one out here who needs a more orderly home! So to help motivate, provide resources, and a goal for all of us, I'm going to try putting together an Organize-My-Home challenge. Each week, I'll give a challenge (like "create a chore chart," "spend 15 minutes per day de-cluttering a room," or something of the like), an incentive (like that everyone who participates that week will be entered into a drawing for something), and How-To information that's practical, easy, and applicable to getting our homes in order in 6 weeks. By the end of the 6 weeks, we should all have very improved homes, and someone should win a fabulous prize package (or something, anyway)!

How you can help:
1) Click on the advertisements once in a while. I don't make much off of this (in fact, I still have yet to get any checks in the mail), but eventually, with enough clicks and purchases, it'll make a little difference.

2) Go through me for any Amazon.com purchases. Just start from my website and click my Amazon banner on the side of the page. This will give me like 3 or 4% commission on your purchase--and believe me, every bit helps in working torwards that Internet goal!

3) Talk to me! Let me know what challenges, events, giveaways, and reviews you'd like to see here. Also, what do you wonder about? What articles are you dying for me to write? Feedback, people, I'm not a mind reader...and I'm hopelessly addicted to meaningful comments, so go ahead--feel popular. Someone really does want to read what you have to say. :-)

2010 Will Be Different!

It's Monday, my first work day in 2010.

I never intended to be at this job in 2010. I was convinced that my returning to work after LoveBug was born would only be a temporary thing. In fact, last month I received a reminder phone call that my annual physical was scheduled for the next day at 10am-- during the middle of the week. When I made that appointment (when LoveBug was 5 weeks old and I hadn't returned to work yet), I never thought I wouldn't be able to make a middle-of-the-day appointment come a year later. The realization of this hit me in the gut when I answered my phone in December, only to tell the receptionist that I would be unable to keep the appointment and would have to get back to them about rescheduling. I haven't called back since.

While I nursed LoveBug this morning, I asked her if she wanted to go to Mimi's house today. She's normally all excited to go to her grandmother's who watches her during the week, but today, she shook her head "no." I reminded her of how fun it is at Mimi's, and how she would have to go because I had to go to work. Again, I asked her if she wanted to go to Mimi's, and again, she shook her head. This time, though, she pointed to me, as well, saying, "no mom, I want to stay with you." Heart crusher!

So here I am, at my desk. I need to change all of my calendars today, cancel orders that haven't been shipped yet (no money to pay with now that it's a new year and new budget), and try to stay awake. I already did my morning routine of checking all of the job listings in the area to see of my husband qualifies for any of them (it's always either over qualified or not enough experience), checking my email, and reading through any potentially interesting Facebook comments.

When I'm feeling bummed or like I need to rest but "there's too much to do," my husband tells me to make lists because it always makes me feel productive. So today, the first monday of 2010, I will make a list.

This-Year-Will-Be-Different List:

1) Be healthier. I will figure out how to incorporate exercise into my ridiculously full day, working around my desire to climb into bed. I will also drink more water, and eat more veggies. Maybe a Body-During-Baby contest, like Samantha's Body-After-Baby over at http://www.mamanotes.com/? More on this idea to come...when I have time...

2) Read my Bible on a daily basis. Even if it's just a verse at a time. I used to do this without fail, and my wellbeing certainly reflected that. Then I began dating my husband and I was on the phone at night instead of reading. Hmmm...

3) Organize my house. Every nook and cranny! Since this is a common problem for a lot of us, I've been devising a plan to host a blogosphere Organize-My-Home event...I'm thinking a 6-week journey that will take participants into a whole new house of order and peace!

4) Make a budget. This will involve forcing my husband to stick to it, so we'll see.

5) Create a successful business that gets me back home where I belong! It can't hurt to try, right?
