If you want to be completely cured of any possible desire for this, go to a halloween store. I ran into one 2 yrs ago, to pick something up real quick and saw a toddler carrying around this dead fetus prop, dragging it along by its umbilical cord, parents laughing... i wanted to throw up. i immediately turned around and left. It challenged my view of cutesy costumes and church halloween parties being ok, that's for sure. But, my suggestion for you is to to something better. To replace the lass-than-good with the better and best.
I was impressed that your kids want to be firemen. Maybe you can play that up teaching them how firefighters are heroes and plan some service activities around Halloween to help them be heroes.Meganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08490099924340840035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2590679856739734993.post-37027068608357806432012-10-20T21:43:57.139-04:002012-10-20T21:43:57.139-04:00I feel torn about Halloween too, but for different...I feel torn about Halloween too, but for different reasons. I don't like the focus on fear and darkness or the materialism... or the high fructose corn syrup. We try to meet pop culture and still respect our own values by participating in an alternative sort of way. We carve a pumpkin and watch it glow and enjoy the light as the days grow shorter. We eat pumpkin soup and roast seeds. I suppose we treat it more as an Autumn festival than a day of horror. My littles dress up for a celebration with friends, but not as little goblins... or the latest Disney character. We do not, however, trick or treat... Though I am considering handing out a treat. I'm still unsure...
I actually wrote a post a couple of years ago here:
http://ohbabyo.wordpress.com/2010/10/27/handmade-halloween/
As for other holidays, we celebrated Christmas as a time of love and generosity. Easter is a time of renewal and awakening for us.
I suppose each family has to find what is right for them and stand by that.
Good for you for being true to yourself. Take care, Rachel♥ xoxoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
